I often hear how someone was truly upset or hurt by another’s actions towards them.
Well, the fact of the matter is that you are part of the problem. We often create our relationship issues with what is going on within ourselves. When someone I work with is truly upset because of an interaction or series of interactions, they often claim that being in a relationship with anyone is not worth it. Well, unfortunately we can’t escape any relationships even if we refuse to associate with anyone because we still have to associate with ourselves. Our relationship issues begin within us as we are the cause of most all of our relationship issues.
In order to truly have successful interactions and relationships with others, we must first have a healthy relationship with ourselves. I spoke on “Building Relationships Begins with You”. During that keynote speech, I was attempting to get the leaders in the room to understand that they must first find balance within themselves. I was fortunate to meet so many new individuals and hear about their quests and issues in life and career. In one setting I met a team of individuals who are truly amazing, but are struggling in a work environment that is not supporting their true skills. It really brought to life how we go through each day without truly seeing the potential we have. We have lost our purpose and are unable to lead or truly experience strong relationships because we are so caught in our own life redundancy and failure to see beyond the barriers we live within.
Think about your week. How did you feel when you headed to work each day? Dreading the “commute” or excited for the day? How were your relationships at work during each day? Was there a great deal of complaining or a great deal of positive, productive relationships and work? What about your time at home following your work day? Did you have positive and loving relationships or tired and confronting relationships? Look at your week. Evaluate how you felt about yourself each day. What was your focus on?
